Volunteers Sew Safety and Comfort for Homeless

Five months into the new reality of shelter in place, FUMC members have made and distributed over 500 face masks in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Recipients have mainly been Community Meals guests but some of the masks have helped those in homeless encampments, St John’s Tuesday Respite Center, and a few have even gone to church members and staff.

You might recall that in late March and April there was a severe shortage of face masks. That is when a couple FUMC members and friends went into action crafting beautiful, comfortable and washable face masks!

Masks may be easier to come by these days but not always for the unhoused. When the governor made wearing a face mask in public indoor spaces mandatory, some of our unhoused guests said that having a FUMC face mask meant they were able to enter a store to buy some groceries, or water.

Now with triple digit temperatures upon us, volunteers are expanding their efforts to include neck coolers to give some cooling comfort to our unhoused guests .

Do you, or do you know of anyone who sews and might be interested in helping?  Contact Patricia: 916 225 8511

Last, a big shout out to our seamstresses, Shirley Bramham, Laura Reed, Roberta Mori, and Phillis Helsel!
