Coat Drive Success!

Todd Parker noticed, at Community Breakfast, that people starting to carry blankets. Some of the blankets were being dropped here and there.

Kari Gaul said, “we need to get coats for these people so they can stay warm.”  The Coat Drive was born and a call in the newsletter was sent out. Then on Saturday November 21st, Todd and Kari supported by Bill Skinner stood on J Street and 21st with Coat Drive signs. People from the church and local neighborhoods came through!

Neighbors told neighbors, cars stopped by, church members dropped off coats, the word spread, people brought coats, sweaters, hoodies, rain coats, overcoats and fleeces. “We collected over 100 warm items in one day!” said Kari.

The best moment happened when a woman in a pink jacket stopped and gave us the jacket right off her back. We began sorting sizes on Monday and Bill washed many of the items.

On Sunday November 29th at the Community Breakfast over 50 coats were handed out to our guests!  Mary Meister, in her excellent personal shopper mode, helped make sure the guests had the right fit and color!   We are planning on another coat drive on December 19th at FUMC and we really need men’s Large and X Large coats!
