I’ve been going over notes and records on the Sanctuary and ancillary Welcome Project. Since 2018 we’ve spent over $250,000 on restoring the Sanctuary, and look to spend more than a million dollars yet on the work. (Combining all the steps and projections, I see a total figure just shy of $1,500,000.00 before we’re done!) It’s been a long hard slog to get here, and we appear now to be on the cusp of beginning the biggest phase of the project.
Each of you worked in one way or another on this. Maybe you were surveyed in 2016, or 2017, or 2020. Many of you have sent contributions. Some of you are still sending in monthly amounts to meet a pledge you made. Many of you have worked on teams that have moved the work forward. Many of you have been a part of the conversation about gaining more funding through a property sale at the corner of 22nd and J. And all of you have prayed and hoped for First Church to continue to work toward greater and greater ministry and better and better welcome.
We committed to being a church family together. We have been drawn to this by the Spirit of God. And we have found strength together for the hard work as well as joy in the journey. As the Bishop has made my appointment to begin my sixth year with you, I am entirely honored and humbled to share this journey with you. I honor your hard work and the values you have committed yourselves to.
I’m in. We’re in this together, and God is fully capable of giving us the capabilities that will get us the next steps of the way not only of upgrading the building, but of expanding our loving work for each other and for so many others in our community, and even our world.
